Introduction

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Student Hostel provides 90 accommodation places for students in need from our school and the Hong Kong Red Cross Margaret Trench School. Among these, 78 residential places are for 7-day boarder and 12 are for 5-day boarder. Students whose families are difficult to provide care, who have an unsuitable home environment, who live far from school, or who have severe physical disabilities can apply for the residential care places through the school social worker.

 

In addition to providing residential care services, the hostel offers personal self-care training, homework tutoring, emotional counseling, developmental groups, and recreational activities for boarders, working together with the school and parents to foster students' personal growth. Our boarding section also collaborates with the school's interdisciplinary team to inspire residents' potential through various training and activities, preparing them for future participation in or contribution to the society.

 


Service goals

The dormitory provides regular residential life training and diversified activities to achieve the following goals:

  1. Provide accommodation and nursing care services to students in our school
  2. Support students’ parents who have difficulties in taking care of their children
  3. Improve the self-care ability of the boarders.
  4. Strengthen the adaptability of our boarders, including: cultivating good living habits, establishing good interpersonal relationships, and learning problem-solving abilities, etc.
  5. To cultivate a sound personality in the boarders, including: personal responsibility, establishing a positive self-image and a positive and optimistic outlook on life.
  6. In line with the school’s education and training objectives, we will well prepare our boarders for their future integration into society.

 

Service quota

The boarding section provides 90 residential places (including 78 places for 7-day boarders and 12 for 5-day boarders). There are 58 places for boys and 32 places for girls

 

 Service type

Accommodation services are mainly divided into two types: 5-day and 7-day boarding services

  • 7-day boarding service: 7-day boarder who can stay in the dormitory for seven days a week.
  • 5-day boarding service :5-day boarder only stay in the dormitory from Monday to Thursday and go home for vacation on Friday every week.

 

Temporary care services for current and former students:

  • Daytime temporary care/accommodation services are provided to current students, boarders, and students who have left the school within the past two years.
  • Available based on dormitory occupancy.
  • Parents/carers in need can apply to the school social worker at least 5 days in advance.
  • After the application is accepted, you must fill in the application form and provide the student's physical examination report /medical records, etc., and sign the service consent form before the accommodation can be arranged.
  • Daytime temporary care/the accommodation period for each application cannot exceed 3 days. If you have special difficulties, please discuss with the school social worker

  • Registered nurses are on shift duty and provide 24-hours nursing care by on call duty.
  • Conduct regular physical health examinations for boarder, monitor their physical condition, and arrange our boarders to participate in appropriate health plans, such as dental examinations, vaccinations, etc.
  • Provide medical care seminars for family members, residents and staff
  • Collaborate with United Christian Hospital - Community Support Service for Children with Complex Medical Conditions to provide professional medical advice and follow-up to boarders
  • When necessary, nurses or houseparent will escort boarders to medical treatment
  • Infection prevention, environmental inspections, and ensuring a healthy living environment
  • Review the menu to maintain good nutritional quality

4. Self-care training

  • Collaborate with the inter-professional team to arrange various trainings for boarder in dormitory procedures, and individual reward programs are promoted in order to enhance the initiative of the boarders and strengthen their self-care abilities
  • The dormitory will also integrate the Conductive Education(CE) and Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication handicapped Children(TEACCH) approach into the dormitory daily living procedure for the boarders, which creating a synergistic effect and improving the self-management ability of the boarders.

7.Parent work

  • The dormitory holds Dormitory Care Group meetings regularly, inviting parents to attend for exchanges and collecting parents’ opinions, so as to continuously improve the quality of dormitory services.
  • Collaborate with the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Association Wong Tai Sin Wellness Support Center - a dedicated team to support special school graduates and caregivers, provide care and relationship skills training for boarders and their parents, arrange post-school care plans and bridge up with community support services

 

Dormitory facilities

 

  • The main ground floor of the dormitory is general office 1, auditorium, nurse on call room, and the kitchen. There is also a family visiting area on the ground floor to facilitate visits by parents of boarders.
  • The first floor of the dormitory is general office 2, nursing room, male and female staff on call rooms, isolation observation room and laundry room
  • There are 14 boarder’s room on the ground floor and the first floor of the dormitory. Rooms 1 to 10 on the ground floor are male dormitories. Boarders in Kindness & Wisdom Dormitory live in rooms 1 to 4, and boarders in Bravery & Fortitude Dormitory live in rooms 5 to 10. Bravery & Fortitude Dormitory also provided 2-person rooms and 3-4-person rooms for the independent living training purpose. Rooms 11 to 14 on the first floor are the girls’ dormitories of Truth & Goodness Dormitory.
  • The upper floor of the dormitory is the school gymnasium, which provides a place for sports activities and leisure activities for dormitory students.

Dormitory activities

Activity goal

 

According to the different abilities and interests of the boarding students, a variety of training and activities are provided to the boarding students to enrich their lives.

 

Type of activities:

 

1. Self-care training

    Improve the independence of boarders and prepare them for their return to the mainstream.

 

2. Social training

    Improve the expressive ability of boarder and learn social etiquette.

 

3. Interest groups
    Provide different types of learning opportunities for our boarder to explore and develop their own interests.

 

4. Volunteer service
    By inviting different volunteer groups to organize holiday celebrations for boarders, carry out themed learning and assist boarders in outing activities, we would like to increase the opportunities for boarders to come into contact with different people, and also allow boarders to feel that the community cares about them.

 

5. Outings
    Arranged our boarders to visit different exhibitions and unique attractions, will broaden their horizons, and they can also learn to use the public transportation system

 

6. Homework guidance
    Invite volunteer homework tutors to provide learning support to our boarders in need.

 

7. Parent volunteers
    Gathering parents of boarders to participate, assisting and organizing various activities, on the one hand, increases parents' sense of belonging and allows parents to increase communication opportunities with the dormitory staff, on the other hand, it can also empower parents sense of competence

 

8. Sensory training
    Designed for boarders with multiple weakness to increase their connection with life by stimulating their senses.
